Searing pain, as if my skin had been lit on fire, woke me from my unconscious state.
Deep, anguished screams echoed around me.
The inferno on my skin made it feel like it was melting, but there was no fire. Weeping with blood, sharp cuts and wounds throbbed heavily with my heartbeat.
Excruciating agony flooded every part of my body from forehead to feet. Muscles that were sore and immobilized had suddenly been forced awake with the flames licking my skin.
Once the violent throbbing of my wounds notched down from agony to a mere anguish, awareness prickled my mind like cleats on a clay ground. The memories hit me like a movie reel.
Snapping my eyes open, I looked around as I cleared the haze from my mind.
âI envy the ability to fall asleep anywhere. And in your condition,â he clicked, âthat takes quite the talent.â
I knew who it was by the accent. My eyes refused to focus, but finally, they landed on him.
Vito Valenti.
âI couldâve used water to wake you, but I thought dousing you with alcohol would wake you up quicker. Surely, it sparked a fire on your skin with all the wounds I caused.â
He looked so smug and proud of himself.
âYouâre a fucking pussy, Vito.â My voice sounded like Iâd downed a fifth of whisky without coming up for air. âYou fear me, yet you stand there proud as if youâve accomplished something.â
I smirked, hoping it added more insult to my words.
âI did. Youâre tied, Zambrano. I beat you up like the puttano you are, and cut you all over like those fucking large birds you eat during Thanksgiving.â
My muscles screamed, but I shrugged anyway.
âAnyone can do that to a man tied up, Vito. Marcelo and I had untied Giulio during his much enjoyable death. A real man doesnât fight with an advantage, you fucking little prick. Beating up a tied man is easy, and embarrassing.â I looked around for the first time, noting my surroundings, and whispered, âI wouldnât mention that to your boys. They might realize what a fucking codardo figlio di puttana you are.â
Cowardly son of a bitch.
Laughing, I asked, âHow was my pronunciation? Izzy wanted to teach me Italian, and I insisted on first learning how to curse for situations just like these.â
My breath wheezed out of my lungs as he kicked me twice on the side and once in the abs.
âYou wonât be laughing when your bitch comes here.â
Knowing it would piss him off more, I laughed even though it felt like my stomach wanted to explode out of my abs.
âShe would never come here. Never.â
His smile was too cunning and knowing for my liking.
âUgo!â
A tall, dark-haired musclehead with droopy eyes and a scarred lip ambled in. Vito jutted his chin towards me and his lackey sidled over.
The room I was in was large. Tables standing more on prayers than their legs were at the far end of the room. Rusted stools were nearby. Grimy green wallpaper was stained in some places and peeling off in others.
